Pillar of Community goes to her Eternal Reward

Mrs Moira Hannon died peacefully on 11th September 2020 at University Hospital Limerick and with her death our parish lost another of its great characters and someone who was a pillar of our community for many years. Moira came to Bodyke in 1963 after her marriage to Christy Hannon when they purchased what had been the Kiely home in the village and she and Christy quickly immersed themselves in community activities and in church service. Mrs Hannon’s long period of dedicated service as sacristan in the Church of the Assumption was recognized when she was awarded the papal Benemerenti Medal in 2009 (Please search under Benemerenti Medal for a report on this website about the ceremony surrounding that award) and indeed she continued to act as sacristan for many years after that and was also very active in the Apostolic Work Society.

Mrs Hannon was keenly interested in local history and in the folklore of the parish and of her beloved Corofin and she loved to share her stories with the pupils of Bodyke NS , with the residents of Raheen Community Hospital where she herself later spent several contented years and with fellow parishioners at local gatherings. She also liked to share words of wisdom from the writings of her first cousin John O’Donoghue, the late poet and scholar whom she greatly admired. Mrs Hannon regularly copied her favourite prayers and distributed them widely. These hand-written gems found a place in many prayer-books throughout the parish and people would think of her as they prayed at home. Some of these same parishioners might even remember how she would loudly encourage them to increase the volume of their responses as she led the recitation of the Rosary before Sunday Masses in Bodyke!

Covid 19 restrictions meant that many of Mrs Hannon’s friends were unable to be present at her funeral Mass in Bodyke on Sunday 13th September or to sympathize personally with her family of whom she was justifiably proud but the thoughts of so many people were with Annmarie, Theresa, Michael and William and with their families. The sympathy of the parish community is extended to them. Go raibh leaba ar neamh ag Mrs Hannon dílis .
